British Dairying press release August 2010
The “Superfine” Route to More Milk Sold
The ultimate in bedding softness is now being achieved by Preston-based Company EnviroSystems UK Ltd. After 9 years of fine-tuning and perfecting their bedding through working with farmers and listening to their requests they are now producing the finest and most comfortable bedding yet. Predictions of reduced straw yields this winter after what has been the driest summer in 80 years is leading farmers to look for economical, hygienic and absorbent alternatives.
The organic, sustainable option of recycled waste-paper provides a year-round practical livestock bedding and the newly improved ultra fine dairy cow bedding is now available to the farming industry. When heat treated to 95% dry matter, recycled wet paper-sludge produces a highly absorbent and hygienic animal bedding; and can consistently achieve five times the absorbency of sawdust/shavings and ten times the absorbency of straw.
Dried paper-bedding rapidly absorbs excess moisture and ammonia in the cattle cubicles maintaining a clean and healthy cubicle environment. The fully biodegradable nature of paper bedding readily breaks down, can be pumped through slurry channels and easily spread onto land.
This unique solution to animal bedding was first developed by EnviroBed UK Ltd in 2001 and since its launch it has been developed over the years to deliver optimum absorbency, stability and texture to EnviroBed.
Liz Russell, EnviroSystems MD explains: “Being weak alkaline, EnviroBed has a favourable pH of 7-7.4 and is unattractive to mastitis causing bacteria. Cows have lower cell counts and live in a healthier environment because of the bedding’s ability to absorb ammonia.” Additionally the natural lime content of paper helps maintain a favourable environment along with the added convenience of not needing to use lime on the cubicle beds.
The EnviroSystems team have listened to farmers and understood how to further improve the quality. One consistent comment concerned the “coarse” texture. Through production changes and maximising the fibre content we are now confident that the latest EnviroBed is the driest, most absorbent and comfortable bedding produced to date.
Liz relates: “Continued improvement to dryness, fineness and comfort provides the farmer with reliable, prolonged-lifespan bedding. This encourages cows to lie down for longer which maximises milk production, longevity and farm profits.”
Delivered direct to farm, EnviroBed is available in bulk or bags and its fine texture is ideal on concrete cubicles, mats, mattresses and loose housing. The company’s first innovation has become a leading choice in animal bedding in the UK for its high absorbency, hygiene, comfort, eco-friendliness and practicality.
