MORE MILK FROM SILAGE AND REDUCING CLAMP WASTAGE – TOP YIELDING LANCS DAIRY HERD HOSTS OPEN DAY
Farmers are invited to an on-farm event on March 9th 2010 being hosted by Fylde dairy farmers James and Anne Rogerson, whose production of around 10,000 litres of milk a day from their 260-cow Holstein herd is heavily reliant on high intakes of top quality silage.
The event will discuss the beneficial impact of the silage additive Optimize – developed by Preston-based EnviroSystems - on silage quality, palatability and forage intakes in the Rogerson’s pedigree Avenham herd which has an average yield of 11,500 litres per cow.
Silage treated with Optimize contains low levels of lactic acid, spoilage organisms and waste while still having high plant sugar and effective protein levels producing higher intakes. Says Liz Russell, managing director of EnviroSystems: “When the silage reaches the rumen, which has a pH of 6.4, the dormant Bacillus spores provided through the Optimize additive, become activated and produce digestive enzymes which further aid the breakdown of the cow’s diet.
“Due to the overall increase in nutrient availability, this leads to increased absorption in the intestine resulting in higher milk production, improved fertility and resistance to disease.”
The event will take place at Game Farm, Station Rd., Singleton, near Poulton-le-Fylde. Lancashire FY6 8LQ on Tuesday March 9th 2010 from 11am to 2pm.
