New inoculant launched: Slurry Booster System (SlurryBugs + SlurryBooster)
Livestock farmers can enhance the nitrogen value in slurry by up to 300% to a value of over £64.00 per acre by introducing the next generation of inoculation from EnviroSystems (UK). For a 340 cow herd, that figure translates to more than £30,000 worth of nitrogen contained in 200 days of slurry produced over the winter housing period and applied at a rate of 3,000 gallons per acre.
Called the Slurry Booster System, independent trial findings from the dairy herd at the University of Central Lancashire, Myerscough College found that after treatment with the new inoculation, the enhanced slurry contributed 55.3kg/N/acre compared to the control untreated sample which contributed 18.9kg/N/acre. The inoculation system also overcame the main problems associated with stored slurry such as crusting, separation and odour.
The new system comprises of SlurryBugs, containing naturally occurring bacteria which produce enzymes that breakdown the organic material in slurry and consume ammonia to reduce odour and preserve N content. The second ingredient, SlurryBooster is a complex micronutrient formulation that actually increases the bacterial activity in the slurry. When introduced to slurry together at the lagoon, they supply an inoculation that improves the nitrogen concentration and eliminates the need to mix by ensuring efficient conversion of solid material in to liquid nutrient.
EnviroSystems’ Liz Russell explains that slurry applied at a rate of 3,000 gallons per acre will deliver just short of £64.00 of N/acre; with 34.5N fertilizer currently trading at approximately £400/tonne, 1kg N works out at £1.16. Add the SlurryBugs + SlurryBooster at a cost of £0.60/1,000 gallons and the value of the enhanced slurry works out at £62.34 worth of N/acre.
“Escalating fertilizer costs are prompting all farmers to think twice about the exact amount they’re applying and when, an approach that has to be commended,” comments Ms Russell. “However, they need to start to acknowledge the value of their slurry as a valuable nutrient and its real potential for further cost saving by introducing one simple minimal cost treatment. The Slurry Booster System incorporates a solar powered bespoke dispenser installed at the lagoon applying a daily inoculation of SlurryBugs + SlurryBooster which saves on mixing costs and delivers a nitrogen rich fertilizer that will be able to make significant cuts to the fertilizer bill.”
