Winter straw shortages and sawdust cost concerns at SW Dairy Event

A main talking point at the South West Dairy Show was the escalating prices of straw and sawdust. One alternative demonstrated at the show was heat-treated recycled paper bedding, an option farmers were assured will be staying a consistent price throughout the winter.

Dried to 95% dry matter, paper bedding becomes highly absorbent, has an extended lifespan and fully biodegradable it readily feeds through slurry channels and spreads onto land. The natural liming effect reduces added lime costs and maintains a favourable pH of 7.4, keeping mastitis to a minimum and assuring quality, low cell-count milk.

Lancashire-based EnviroSystems exhibited "EnviroBed" paper bedding which has been developed over the past 9 years and received a Queens Award for Innovation in 2006. Five times more absorbent than sawdust/shavings and ten times more absorbent than straw, EnviroBed rapidly absorbs moisture and ammonia.

Delivered direct to farm in bulk or bags, its fine texture is ideal on all bedding systems. A five year user of EnviroBed, Mr Les Heywood of East Milford Farm, Bideford comments "EnviroBed stays on the cubicles well, easily breaks down in the slurry tanks and each load goes further than other beddings, assisting our overall farm costs."
